Leslie Stanbury

I am a licensed clinical professional counselor with over 20 years of experience. I work with adults suffering from anxiety, depression, and substance abuse as well as the impact these issues have on relationships with friends and family.

My counseling profession began working with adults experiencing problems with alcohol and other drugs and I soon realized that often people engaging in illicit drug use as well as alcohol may also be experiencing anxiety or depression. In order to better serve my clients, I returned to school and earned a Masters Degree in Clinical Community Counseling from Johns Hopkins University.
Following retirement from the Anne Arundel County Health Department, I began a private practice in the Annapolis area. My office is located in my home in Riva where I provide a quiet, peaceful setting to promote safety and encourage clients to explore their concerns and fears. Research has supported the value of the relationship between client and counselor and I believe trust is an important factor within that relationship. Additionally, I believe seeking help to address problems in life is an indication of strength and courage by accepting that we all need help from time to time. Although I've studied various theorists, I believe mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy can be very effective and help with both anxiety and mood disorder.
I am certified by the National Board of Counselors and a member of the American Counseling Association. My training includes hypnotherapy and EMDR.
