According to Schlossberg's Transition Theory, the four major factors that influence a person's ability to cope in the transition include the situation, self, support, and strategies. As a counselor, I would utilize the Transition Theory in conjunction with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and additional therapeutic modalities to motivate clients toward make the necessary changes to becoming their ideal self.
One of my objectives as a therapist at Ashwood Counseling is to assist clients during the curves on their personal journey along with the many transitions during their life experiences. The transition experience can be successful when the client first evaluates the transition and begin assessing the situation and utilizing coping skills and resources gained from previous life transitions. Transition is the initial step of recognizing the situation and steering the process into a successful transition.
Secondly, clients identify self, their personal and demographic characteristic that determines how the client views life as well as psychological resources that aid in coping with the transition. Clients will reflect on their strengths that caused them to overcome various obstacles and challenges.
Thirdly, identifying the type of support, its function, and the measurement of support including, friends, institutions, and communities that can assist during the transition. Clients will be encouraged to identify community resources that will help with their needs or situation.
Fourthly, strategies utilized to direct clients to modify the situation, control the meaning of the transition, and help in managing the stress due to the consequences. The factors of the situation, self, support, and strategies to utilize counseling to make for a successful client transition experience.
