About me
Dr. Héctor Torres
I am an affirming bilingual Spanish speaking psychologist who has specialized in working with individuals from communities that are often marginalized and therefore may experience discrimination, stigma, invalidation, and racism.
My story is shaped by leaders who were not content to stay on the sidelines. By bold thinkers and revolutionary doers who refused to accept the status quo. I was inspired by these leaders and their stories. Now, with more than 15 years of clinical experience, I have developed essential skills for therapy. My approach is one that pays attention to human potential, interpersonal relationships, and understanding individuals’ contexts. I also believe that stigma, oppression, and power dynamics are often responsible of many individuals’ distress and psychological symptoms, and therefore addresses these topics in therapy.
My experience has been enriched by the diversity of settings where I have worked, which have included: Hospitals, Universities and Medical Schools, Private Practice, Substance Abuse Facility, Correction System, and Community Agencies. Throughout my career I have been able to publish articles, book chapters and one book, and present in the media, and at national and international conferences. I have been fortunate to have been the recipient of various awards including the Advocate for Boys of the Year Award by the American Psychological Association.
Finally, I am also one of the co-founders of the Building a Better Man Project, a violence prevention program addressing masculinity (Building a Better Man (bbmproject.com).
