Heather Dumas

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia with over 19 years of experience in the mental health field. I have experience working in community mental health, as well as a school counselor. Past experience includes therapeutic day treatment, outpatient therapy, and crisis stabilization. I work with children, adolescents, adults and families.

Are you struggling to manage your emotions or behavior? Does your child seem sad, anxious, or have frequent mood swings? I can help! I assist children and adults in learning how to better regulate their emotions so that they can feel better and be more engaged in the present moment. I offer both in-person sessions and teletherapy. I also offer animal-assisted psychotherapy.

During child sessions, parents join for a portion of the session and learn the skills their child is learning so they can support their child. I believe that while it is important for the child to be able to share information confidentially with their therapist, it is also important for the parent to know what the child is doing in their counseling session. As a parent of three active children (ages 8, 12, and 16), I am aware of the stresses of parenting at different stages, and the chaos that comes with managing multiple school aged children and their activities.
