About me
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with seven years experience. I help individuals experiencing loss, grief and bereavement and sudden life changes, anxiety and depression, and I am very effective in helping people develop coping skills and strategies to develop healthier relationships.
I am a bilingual (Spanish/English) Licensed Clinical Social Worker with seven years experience in the field of social work, and 10+ years of experience in the helping professions. I have worked in a mental health clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and community-based settings. I graduated from New York University’s Silver School of Social Work and have earned the post-graduate certificate on CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). I am also a Zelda Foster Fellow: my specialty is Palliative Care and End of Life Care, and I am a trained hospital chaplain.
I understand the psychosocial and emotional implications of different communication styles, cultural expressions of grief and joy, power differentials, capacities to overcome adversity, sexual preference and gender identification, and structural oppression. I am a compassionate, resilient, and caring individual who values self-determination, self-empowerment, authenticity, gratitude, humility, and solidarity. We all are a work-in-progress; self-development never ends. There is always something more to learn about ourselves and we have unlimited opportunities for self-transformation.
My practice is person-centered, strength-based, and trauma-informed. Most importantly, it is a SAFE ZONE for individuals of all ethnicities, abilities, religions/spiritual practices, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Multiculturalism is the guiding principle of my work. I use an eclectic approach to psychotherapy and choose interventions based on each individual’s context and particular emerging concerns.
I see psychotherapy as a life giving practice that allows us all to reach our potential by becoming people with wisdom and courage to be ourselves as we interact in our specific contexts. Engaging in psychotherapy is key to personal liberation.
My signature approaches in the area of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy include Acceptance and Commitment, Interpersonal Therapy, Affect Regulation, Assertive Communication Skills, Behavioral Activation, Coping Skills Training, Motivational Interviewing and Problem Solving therapy.
Within Insight-Oriented Therapy I use Life Review, Narrative Therapy. In addition, I incorporate spirituality and mindfulness activities as well as deep breathing and guided imagery meditations.
I am passionate about deep self-knowledge. I will briefly assess if we are a good match and will engage in getting to know your bio-psychosocial history as well as your emotional and spiritual needs. Then, we will discuss a range of approaches that would work best for you. You will identify your values and learn to live the most authentic life you can. We will identify your triggers and your reactions to them, and you will learn coping strategies to produce healthy responses to stress. The body-mind-spirit connection is central to my work and, through journaling, meditations, or mindfulness exercises, you will remain motivated. I am sensitive and attentive to issues of cultural identity and diversity.
There is a quote from Lilla Watson that summarizes my vision of what psychotherapy is about: "If you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”
