About me
I'm a licensed psychologist providing online affirmative therapy for LGBTQIA+ adults who feel overwhelmed, devastated, or disconnected after trauma and loss, helping them find direction and purpose again.
Greetings! I’m Dr. Weston Donaldson (he/him), a gay man and board-certified geropsychologist. In my telehealth practice, I provide online therapy for LGBTQ+ adults and older adults who feel lost, overwhelmed, or disconnected after a significant life transition. My goal is to help you find direction and purpose again in a world that often overlooks the unique ways our community experiences loss.
Navigating Loss in a Queer Context
Grief is rarely just about the passing of a loved one; it is often about the shifting of our entire world. You may be seeking online grief counseling after the death of a partner or a member of your chosen family—people who may not have been recognized by traditional systems, but who were the center of your universe.
Perhaps you aren't grieving a death, but rather a change in your own body. I specialize in helping clients adjust to chronic illness, a new disability, or the functional changes that come with time. These health shifts can feel like a loss of identity, especially when trying to appear "okay" to a society that prizes youth and vigor. After experiencing a traumatic loss, you may feel stuck in painful memories of how life used to be, unsure how to move forward when the future you planned for no longer feels possible.
Specialized LGBTQ Caregiver Support
Caregiving is an act of profound love, but for our community, it often comes with a "double burden." Whether you are caring for an aging parent, a partner, or a friend, you might be navigating healthcare systems that feel unsafe or exclusionary. I provide dedicated LGBTQ+ caregiver support to help you manage the emotional depletion and "compassion fatigue" that often go unspoken. We will work to ensure that while you care for others, you are not losing yourself in the process.
Empowering the Path of Aging
As a geropsychologist, I am passionate about LGBTQ+ aging support. I am mindful of how stigma, political oppression, and discrimination impact our mental health. In my practice, your identity is viewed as a source of strength. I understand that many LGBTQ+ people don't enter therapy to discuss their sexual orientation or gender identity—they come in to discuss retirement, health changes, or relationship loss. However, having a therapist who inherently "gets" the complexity of being LGBTQ+ in this world allows us to skip the explanations and get straight to the healing.
My Therapeutic Approach
What we think about, what we do, and how we feel are all inextricably linked. In our sessions, we will identify unhelpful patterns of avoidance and work together to change how you relate to unwanted, painful experiences. My approach is value-driven; we focus on what matters most to you and translate that into actionable steps. I am also trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to address post-traumatic stress, grief, and other concerns.
I am licensed in Wisconsin, Colorado, and Utah, and authorized to practice telepsychology in over 40 states under PSYPACT. Schedule a 15-minute free consultation on my website, or give me a call to get started.
You bring the expertise in your own life; I bring the clinical tools to help you rebuild. Let’s start the journey back to yourself together.
