Hi! My name is Tanja Romney and if you can relate to any of the following questions, please know that I can help!
Do you experience a disconnection to yourself and the world around you?
Do you feel that you are overwhelmed by stress, depression, anger and a myriad of other issues resulting from a present event or earlier life event that hinders your ability to function?
Do you find yourself making plans and then cancelling them at the last minute because it feels too difficult to be around other people?
Do you find yourself simply isolating from loved ones and friends because you do not have the emotional and mental bandwidth for personal interactions?
Do you have difficulty managing your emotional regulation and you find yourself getting angry/sad more often than usual?
Has your marriage suffered a loss or trauma? Some examples can include but are not limited to:
Loss of a child or loved one to death or addiction or poor life choices
Porn, Infidelity/betrayal trauma
Sexual dissatisfaction in relationship
Loss of things in common resulting in disconnection in relationship
Loss of physical and/or emotional intimacy in relationship
Being a caregiver to a spouse/child
Terminal illness
Have you experienced a life transition that is causing you unexpected distress and even grief. While some of these may be reasons to celebrate, for many people they are also times where it is difficult to understand the sadness that may accompany these events. Some examples include but are not limited to:
Retirement
Becoming an empty nester
Having a baby
Career change
Marriage of child
Faith crisis/transition
If you can relate to any of those, and you find yourself struggling, I would love to help.
My approach to therapy is what is referred to as an eclectic approach. I utilize a range of therapeutic techniques depending on the client's unique situation. The therapies I use most include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In addition, when working with couples I use the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT).
I bring a myriad of life experiences with me that aids in my ability to understand trauma, grief and relationship issues in a visceral way which allows me to hold space for someone else's experience. I help clients understand how things that may have happened as early as childhood may be affecting how they show up or cope in their lives or in relationships as an adult. Together I work with clients to unpack maladaptive coping strategies and replace them with healthier ones.
I help clients get unstuck from trauma using evidence-based trauma techniques such as EMDR to move forward in their lives. I also sit beside clients as they navigate their most devastating grief recognizing that not all grief comes from the death of a loved one. Grief is the feeling we have that accompanies loss. Loss of a pet, loss of a dream, loss of expectations, etc. I help clients to grieve and accept their reality while also helping them find hope for their future.
If you have been too embarrassed to seek couple's therapy, please reach out. I know firsthand the blessings of good couples therapy as I have been married for 30 years and have utilized it in my own personal life. You don't have to wait until divorce is on the line to seek help. I also offer premarital counseling to give couples the foundational communication skills and understanding they desire. I also have additional training in sex therapy for those who feel it would be beneficial in their current or future marriage.
If you or your relationship needs help, please reach out. In my office ALL emotions are welcome. Your personal story will never be too big or too shameful for me. I would love to help!
