About me
I am Tamzin Brain, a UK-based Hypno-Counsellor with over 15 years' experience in counselling and hypnotherapy. I am also an Approved Anxiety UK Therapist and Mindfulness Coach.
I particularly enjoy working with people who want to understand themselves more deeply – not simply what they think, feel or do, but why.
You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, stress or overwhelm, or perhaps you feel stuck in old patterns and find that experiences and versions of yourself from your past are still influencing the person you are today. You might know that you want something to change but aren't quite sure how to get there, or be beginning to question things you have always believed about yourself.
Who I Work With
I naturally seem to attract reflective and neurodivergent clients, including people exploring their own neurodivergence later in life. Although I do not diagnose neurodevelopmental conditions, therapy can provide a valuable space to explore your experiences, understand yourself with greater compassion and discover ways of living and communicating that work better for you.
I enjoy working with people at very different stages of life – from young adults navigating identity, relationships, confidence and the transition from their teenage years into adulthood, to people in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond who bring a lifetime of experiences to therapy but remain curious about themselves and open to change.
There is no age by which we are supposed to have ourselves completely figured out. Sometimes something has affected us for decades before we reach the point of thinking, “I don't want this to keep affecting me – I want to understand why.”
Supporting Parents & Young People
I particularly enjoy supporting parents who are struggling to understand or communicate with their children, teenagers or adult children. I have a particular understanding of neurodivergent children and young people and the different ways in which they may experience, communicate and respond to the world around them.
Sometimes one of the most valuable things I can offer a parent is simply helping them make sense of behaviour or experiences that have previously been difficult to understand. Looking beyond a behaviour to consider what might be driving it can change the way we respond, reduce conflict and open up new ways of communicating and connecting.
My understanding comes from both professional and lived experience. I spent over 10 years working in secondary education with children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), supporting them within lessons, in small groups and one-to-one. This included work around emotional regulation, anger management and social and emotional development.
I have also taught relaxation, mindfulness and meditation to primary and secondary school-aged children and delivered group hypnotherapy to teenagers experiencing exam and revision stress.
I know that parenting can sometimes leave you wondering whether you're getting anything right, particularly when approaches that seem to work for other families simply don't work for yours. Therapy can offer a non-judgemental space to step away from the immediate situation, make sense of what may be happening for both you and your child, explore different ways of communicating and responding, and find approaches that work better for your particular family.
Grief & Loss
Grief and loss are another important part of my work. Grief can take many forms – bereavement, relationship endings, changes within families, losing a future you expected, or adjusting to a life that now looks different.
Sometimes there isn't something that needs to be “fixed”; you may simply need somewhere safe to bring your grief and someone willing to sit alongside you in it.
My Approach to Therapy
I am an intuitive, organic and empathic therapist. My approach is person-centred and integrative, so I will meet you where you are rather than expecting you to fit into a particular therapeutic model.
Some days you may arrive with insights and discoveries you want to explore; on others, particularly when experiencing depression, anxiety or significant stress, simply getting through the week may have taken much of your energy. We can work with what you need at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Underpinning my work is a strong belief in our human capacity for growth. Although we are all individuals, we also share many fundamental human needs and patterns. Our experiences, relationships, circumstances and unmet needs can shape how we see ourselves, respond to the world and the choices we make. We can make choices we later regret, develop ways of coping that no longer serve us, or become disconnected from the person we would like to be. I don't believe those experiences or choices have to define who we are or who we can become.
With the right support and a willingness to grow, I believe we are all capable of moving towards a fuller and more authentic version of ourselves. There is often far more capability, insight, strength and possibility within a person than they can currently see, and one of the things I love most about being a therapist is seeing someone begin to recognise more of that within themselves.
I particularly value those moments when something begins to make greater sense – when a client makes a connection, develops a deeper understanding of themselves or their experiences, or discovers a different way of looking at something they may have carried for a long time. I feel genuinely privileged to share those moments with my clients.
I don't believe that I am the expert on you. You are. My role is to bring my therapeutic knowledge and experience alongside the knowledge, insight and understanding you already have about yourself.
Hypnotherapy, Stress & Change
Depending on your needs, our work may draw upon counselling and psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, mindfulness and meditation, NLP, IMR and Inner Child work. We might explore the deeper roots of a difficulty or focus on practical strategies and resources that you can use in everyday life.
I particularly enjoy helping people manage anxiety, stress and overwhelm. Counselling can help us understand what is happening and what may be contributing to it, while hypnotherapy, relaxation, mindfulness and meditation can provide practical tools for calming your mind and body and responding differently to stress.
Meditation and relaxation have been an important part of my work with individuals, groups and families across different age groups. During the pandemic, I delivered more than 30 live online meditation sessions suitable for adults, children and families.
Hypnotherapy is another part of my work that I particularly love. While some therapeutic work benefits from time and gradual exploration, focused issues such as fears, phobias and smoking cessation can sometimes respond surprisingly quickly.
For example, I usually deliver smoking cessation hypnotherapy in one extended double session, so this is an area where I can sometimes see significant change within a single appointment. I find it incredibly rewarding to see a client leave having made the change they came to see me for.
Everybody responds differently and no therapeutic outcome can be guaranteed, but it can be wonderful to see something that may have restricted someone for years begin to lose its hold.
Sometimes our work will be about understanding. Sometimes it will be about change or discovering strengths and possibilities in yourself that you had forgotten – or perhaps never realised were there.
And sometimes you may simply need somewhere to talk, feel what you are feeling and be understood, without pressure to change anything before you are ready.
We will start wherever you are and move at a pace that feels right for you.
What a Client Has Said
“The feeling of the weight being lifted off my shoulders after each session was noticeable to those around me, and my whole outlook and ability to cope with life has improved. I started out in a very bad place, and it was clear to see [on completing therapy] that I have come a long way.”
