Susan Santiago-Turner, Ph.D., LMHC, LPC, BC-TMH, NCC
I have over 20-years clinical experience as a professional counselor. I help middle aged cisgender females (50 and older) work with their anxiety and depression rather than against it so they can walk more steady in the world.
If you identify as a middle-aged cisgender female deciding whether to serve as a caregiver for your aging parent who was abusive and neglectful during your formative years, please reach-out. I practice from a strengths-based framework in tandem with a blend of feminist, dialectical, and cognitive behavior therapies.
I'll work collaboratively with you to re/discover your existing strengths, and together we'll process the ambivalence you likely feel as you decide whether to serve as a caregiver for a parent who invalidated you during your formative years.
I'll encourage you to live life the way you want, and not how others want. This will likely be the hardest work you'll embark on but absolutely necessary if you're considering becoming a primary caregiver for an aging parent who neglected to protect you when you needed them the most.
Let's work together to find what feels right for you. I can help you decide if being a caregiver is in your best interest. If it is not, I'll help you find sound options to ensure the wellbeing of your elder while maintaining your integrity and mental health wellness. If serving as a caregiver is the way forward, we’ll work through your history of abuse and neglect so you can fulfill this challenging role by setting firm boundaries with those who failed to protect you and thereby, walk steadier in the world.
