About me
Certified Trauma Treatment Specialist and Art Therapist with 30 years experience working with children, teens, first responders, survivors, offenders, military and families.
Problem solving and creativity are my best tools for treating traumatic stress. The treatment team at New Vita Neurotherapy, LLC. views trauma as an injury rather than a disorder, further trauma is often the root or causal diagnosis for may other problems; therefore, symptom reduction and optimal wellness are possible with effective treatment. Treatment begins with a thorough clinical assessment that may include Psycho-Imagery, Neurofeedback, and various screenings to ensure the best possible treatment path. The New Vita team uses art therapy, EMDR, Neurofeedback, Biofeedback, TFT (Callahan Thought Field Therapy - original tapping techniques), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Audio Visual Entrainment (AVE), Alpha-Stim, and Heart Rate Variability (HRV), in addition to traditional talk therapy. The team at New Vita is trained in ICISF Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and offers all the CISM services to include Crisis Management Briefing, Defusing, Debriefings, 1:1, family services, and respite center organization.
The Surgeon General in 2000 stated suicide was a mental health crisis reaching epidemic proportions. In 2019, the Surgeon General stated that suicide prevention should be the responsibility of everyone, family, friends, co-workers, faith communities, schools, bartenders, barbers, and neighbors; literally, the entire community. Suicide seems to be on the rise as we navigate the pandemic fall-out. The team at New Vita is trained in the CAMS (Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality). CAMS is evidence based, utilizes a treatment framework that is suicide-focused with "30 years of clinical research and 5 randomized controlled trials". Research shows that CAMS is "the most effective treatment available for suicidal ideators with promising evidence for effectively treating suicide attempts and self-harm behaviors". The New Vita team understands chronic suicidal ideation and we participate in the Zero Suicide movement. Zero Suicides is an "aspirational challenge and practical framework for system-wide transformation toward safer suicide care". New Vita also works with and supports military suicide programs too.
New Vita Academy of Traumatology offers Green Cross Courses such as Compassion Fatigue, Disaster Trauma, Understanding PTSD, Child/Adolescent Trauma Treatment, Trauma and Family Treatment, and Sexual Trauma. FEMA's Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning Training for Schools and the ICISF CISM for Schools can be taught and tweaked for a system's specific needs. Sherry Todd, PhD, LPC is an approved ICISF CISM instructor for the following courses:
• Individual and Group Crisis Intervention (3-day)
• Law Enforcement Enhanced Intervention (2-days)
• Advanced Group Crisis Intervention (2-days)
• Stress Management for Trauma Providers (2-days)
• School Crisis Intervention (2-days)
• Suicide Prevention, Intervention, & Postvention (2-days)
• Suicide Awareness (1 day)
• Trauma and Addiction (2-days)
New Vita's clinical leadership has experience as full-time faculty teaching graduate counseling students and brings this level training and supervision to the practice. As a training center, we begin working with graduate students through practicum/internship opportunities that train the student in a variety of proven trauma treatment methods. Residents working toward licensure with substantial trauma training (usually through internship with us) are able to offer services at a reduced rate. Finally, New Vita has Licensed Professionals that oversee all the services provided to ensure quality and success.
