About me
I am a flexible-hours therapist with extensive experience providing “solutions-focused” and cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) while embracing full diversity.
Hello, I'm Rick, a licensed and board-certified mental health counselor, therapist, and consultant with over 16 years of experience. I have had the privilege of working with culturally diverse groups, providing solutions-focused and cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) to individuals, couples, and families. My approach is collaborative, interactive, and supportive, and I truly enjoy building ongoing therapeutic alliances with my clients.
I completed my advanced degree in mental health at Chaminade University of Honolulu and gained real-world experience in both Hawaii and Colorado. Throughout my career, I have worked with individuals facing work-related stress, trauma, depression, anxiety, severe and persistent mental illness, and those in crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts. I also have extensive experience with personality and substance use disorders, chronic pain, and medical challenges. My clientele includes adults, children, adolescents, the elderly, the LGBTQIA+ community, veterans, active-duty military, individuals on the autism spectrum, developmentally delayed individuals, and forensic and incarcerated populations.
My goal for clients is progress, and I believe that 'baby steps' are perfect. I use a solutions-focused approach, integrating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help clients navigate their challenges and achieve their goals. I am certified as a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Addiction Counselor II, and have completed the SonderMind Baseline Veteran Education Program.
In my practice, I utilize HIPAA-compliant AI for standard documentation, ensuring your privacy and confidentiality. I am committed to providing a safe and supportive environment where you can feel heard and understood.
Here are some words from my clients:
"Rick is a great therapist! Attentive and pays attention to what you are saying and how you are feeling. He is actually engaged in your sessions, which can actually be a hard thing to find in a therapist. Great working with him!"
"Richard is a great therapist. He not only listens to you but is patient and not judgmental. He lets you open up and then offers insightful and practical advice. He also makes sure you get coping strategies that work for you. He lets you know how you are improving and supports you. For the first time in decades, I feel like I have regained my confidence and happiness! I highly recommend him, especially if you feel lost and scatterbrained like I did. He helps you get back up and feel like a person again. Thank you so much, Richard!"
"Richard knows what he is doing. He’s timely, punctual, and listens to what I have to say. I feel heard working with Richard."
"Richard did wonderful things for me. He was attentive and thought-provoking. I only needed a few sessions, too, to be able to see many things about my situation from a different perspective. He was a game-changer for me!"
"Rick came into my life shortly after my Dad’s passing, my first experience with a professional therapist. Rick is a great listener and intuitive, and he quickly helped me navigate difficult conversations and family dynamics while I was also grieving my Dad’s passing. Rick has a pragmatic approach and gave me real-world solutions that I applied to diffuse complicated grief behaviors within my family. I have learned many identification and communication skills that I will apply to difficult circumstances in the future. I’m happy to highly recommend Rick as a knowledgeable therapist and caring human being."
"Therapy with Rick has been instrumental in helping me move towards the goals I set for myself. The insight and knowledge he offers on the many topics I bring to him have helped me in many areas of my life. No matter the subject we discuss, I feel comfortable giving my thoughts, taking on perspective, and asking questions. Trust that I didn't know I needed. In the beginning, I felt confused and vulnerable because I was afraid to confront what I had been avoiding for many years. Along the way, I've discovered myself, overcome obstacles, and quickly gained momentum in life that couldn't have been achieved by myself. Rick is phenomenal at guiding me towards personal development with simple questions, a positive attitude, great conversation and most importantly, accepting who I am. With his help I've set a path for myself that I feel confident in and will bring me fulfillment. For anyone wondering if they should start therapy with Rick, I say YES. It's up to you to take action in your life, and you have nothing but positive results waiting for you!"
"I have been a client of Rick's for over a year, and I can truly tell you that it is work - but really, really good work! If you are wanting a quick fix, therapy may not be for you. But if you want to chip away at your human condition, learn what makes you tick, and understand your feelings and trauma and where they came from, then Rick is for you. I have been provided a roadmap that I came to the table wanting. I wanted to uncover what was happening in my life. I was driven to have a more actualized relationship with myself and a more neutral stance with those around me. It was Rick that through our sessions, readings/assignments, and accountability I was given the guidance for this. I am a gay, recovering drug addict with plenty of backstory. I had choices. I could stay in a more victim role, blaming the outside for my various sundry of issues. Or I could find my accountability and clear the wreckage. It was through my 12 steps of recovery and Rick's guidance that I have these tools readily available. If/when I choose to use them..? Well, that's what therapy is for!"
If you're ready to take the next step towards your personal growth and well-being, I invite you to reach out. Let's work together to navigate life's challenges and achieve your goals.
