About me

You may look capable on the outside while anxiety, childhood trauma, grief, relationship strain, or the pressure of being strong for everyone else weighs heavily inside. I help children, teens, adults, couples, and families feel understood, build practical coping skills, and move toward meaningful change. My approach is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based care. I also support Black and African clients, refugees, immigrants, New Americans, international students, men, and rural residents navigating identity, faith, family expectations, or life between cultures. I offer in-person therapy in Moorhead and secure telehealth across Minnesota and North Dakota. Obaar Counseling & Consulting is accepting new clients with immediate openings.

You should not have to leave important parts of yourself at the door to begin therapy. Culture, faith, family, identity, migration, work, and lived experience can all shape how stress is carried—and how healing becomes possible. My goal is to offer a welcoming, judgment-free space where you can speak honestly, understand what is keeping you stuck, and practice skills that fit your real life.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and seniors experiencing anxiety, depression, childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences, grief, emotional outbursts, anger, shame, low self-worth, relationship conflict, school anxiety, burnout, overthinking, difficulty with focus, and major life transitions. I also support parents and neurodivergent children using developmentally responsive, relationship-based strategies informed by my Advanced Certificate in DIRFloortime® through ICDL.

Therapy with me is active and collaborative. Depending on your needs, we may draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, person-centered care, and trauma-informed approaches. We may work on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, communication, boundaries, problem solving, present-moment awareness, values, and small changes that build momentum. No single method fits everyone, so we will shape the work around your goals, strengths, culture, and readiness for change.

As a Somali American therapist with lived refugee-resettlement experience, I understand that asking for help can be complicated by stigma, family expectations, faith, language, or the need to stay strong. I provide care in English and Somali and welcome Black and African American clients, East and West African communities, refugees, immigrants, New Americans, international students, and other clients who want culturally responsive care. Faith-sensitive counseling is available when it is important to you; it is never imposed.

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Minnesota and North Dakota, founder of Obaar Counseling & Consulting, and a 2026 Bush Fellow. I bring more than ten years of behavioral-health experience to my work. In-person sessions are available in Moorhead, Minnesota, and secure telehealth is available to eligible clients located in Minnesota or North Dakota at the time of service.
