About me
At Chicago Behavior Therapy, we offer a variety of therapeutic services backed by in-depth training and expertise. Our services include Individual Therapy, Group Therapy, Family Services, and Psychological Evaluations.
Dr. Nick Sotor is a Chicago-born psychologist with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. He has a passion for providing and teaching evidence-based behavioral therapies and is one of the few Linehan Board Certified DBT clinicians working in Chicago. In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Sotor also has experience as a trainer and offers various workshops and training opportunities to clinicians and members of the community.
Dr. Sotor is extremely passionate about his work and enjoys teaching and training clinicians, family members, and community members more effective ways to think about, support, and encourage folks struggling with complex mental health problems. Dr. Sotor teaches the people he works with to view their patients or loved ones within the larger context of their lives instead of resorting to assigning simplistic and often unhelpful labels to a persons experience. He focuses on helping others to accept their clients or loved ones for who they are while at the same time advocating for meaningful change.
Navigating life's challenges and sculpting meaning out of our experiences is a complex journey. As a licensed clinical Psychologist, I'm here to facilitate this process by offering evidence-based behavioral therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as a Linehan Board Certified clinician. My therapeutic stance is nonjudgmental and I have developed an expertise treating a wide range of mental disorders with a specific focus on problems of emotional dysregulation. At Chicago Behavior Therapy I work with individuals, families, and provide professional consultation to clinicians and mental health institutions.
In the therapy room I strive to understand individuals within the larger context of their lives rather than focusing on overly simplistic diagnoses or labels. This stance allows me to practice psychotherapy and provide consultation in a genuine, relational, and compassionate way while at the same time while remaining firmly rooted in theory and providing treatments that have been shown to work. My clinical style can be described as direct, thoughtful, and often irreverent. I work from a place of curiosity and have an appreciation for the various identities, histories, and values that contribute to ourselves as an individual. I organize my life and clinical work around this appreciation and embrace opportunities to engage with individuals and communities who bring with them multiple identities and backgrounds. This value extends not only to differences in race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and sexual orientation, but to the differences understood in the personal way we experience and interact with ourselves and the world around us. I strive to create a therapeutic space that feels validating, safe, and helpful. Understanding that mental health struggles are seldom "simple", I am committed to working with individuals and systems grappling with complex and often challenging problems.
