About me

I have over 30 years of experience working with Children, Adolescents, and Adults in individual, family, and couples therapy. I specialize in the treatment of trauma, but also work with Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Autism, Gender Issues, and Bipolar Disorder.

I have worked in the field of psychology since 1974, when I received my first master's degree. I worked for thirteen years as a school psychologist in Fairfax County, Virginia. In 1988, I returned to school to earn a second master's degree and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from George Mason University. I have maintained a private practice for over 30 years.
In addition to seeing clients on an individual basis, I provide couples and family counseling, and group therapy. If the therapy is in person, I see children ages four and up. Teletherapy works better for teenager, eleven and up in age. I specialize in the treatment of trauma but work with many issues combining cognitive-behavioral, dialectic behavioral, EMDR, internal family systems, and various trauma informed techniques in working with clients. I tailor my therapy to the unique needs of the client.
I currently lead a support group for loved ones of homicide victims for the state of Virginia. I wrote my dissertation on the long-term effects of experiencing the traumatic death of a loved one, with particular emphasis on loss by homicide and other sudden deaths. I have extensive experience working with the surviving family members of homicide victims.
I use trained therapy dogs in my practice, as they serve as important companions and allow distressed clients to feel safe, comfortable and welcome. I maintain a 'dog-friendly' practice. Since the pandemic I have moved many of my clients to telehealth, and I no longer commute to my old office in Fairfax.
Outside of my private practice, I was an adjunct professor at Laurel Ridge Community College (LCCC).
I grew up on a 22-acre farm in Springfield. I now live on a mountain in Clark County, VA where I see clients and raise chickens and ducks for eggs. I have pet goats as well. My new home is perfect for my other interests of hiking, and gardening (when I can keep the deer and bears from the garden).
