About me

I’m a queer, trauma-informed therapist who helps adults and couples navigate identity, intimacy, grief, and life transitions in a warm, affirming space.

Hi, I’m Mackenzie Sherburne (she/her), a queer, trauma-informed therapist offering LGBTQIA affirming and sex-positive therapy for adults and couples in New York City. I specialize in working with clients navigating identity, intimacy, grief, and relationships—including those exploring nontraditional relationships, healing from relational trauma, or moving through big life transitions.
In our work together, I offer a warm, grounded space where you don’t have to have the perfect words—or even a clear sense of what you’re feeling yet. Whether you’re ending a relationship, exploring your sexuality, feeling stuck in the same relational patterns, or wanting to reconnect with yourself and others, therapy can help you slow down and make space for insight, healing, and change.
My practice is rooted in psychodynamic and attachment-based therapy, always through a trauma-informed lens. I help clients explore how early experiences may be shaping their present—focusing on emotional patterns, relational dynamics, and the parts of themself that may have been shut down, misunderstood, or ignored. Our pace is collaborative, attuned, and based on what you need most right now.
I especially enjoy supporting LGBTQIA clients and folks in polyamorous, kink, or otherwise nontraditional relationships. As someone who brings lived experience into this work, I aim to create a space that’s affirming and expansive—where your complexity is welcome and your story can unfold without shame.
Before becoming a therapist, I worked for years as a performer and teaching artist. That background continues to inform my work: I bring creativity, humor, and curiosity into the room, helping clients connect with their own voice and resilience. I now practice at the Sexuality, Attachment, and Trauma Project in NYC, offering both in-person and virtual sessions.
Wherever you’re starting from, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
