About me
I'm a psychotherapist with a specialty in Trauma Healing and Somatic Therapy. I am also an EMDR therapist. Working with the body in healing and processing Trauma/trauma offers a powerful way to connect and heal. Please visit my website: https:// www.SomaticExperiencing.nyc for more information.
Somatic Psychotherapy works to foster body-brain integration. When you pay attention to how you sense yourself physically, you are using a different part of your brain than the part we use for language and making meaning. Our work together helps integrate these different parts. This is important in healing and regulating.
• There are many ways to work with the body in person and online; how therapy proceeds will depend on the history and issues the client brings.
• As an example, we may look at how to gently re-educate your body to breathe more freely and deeply, and help the body/ mind access this whenever needed. This is called Breathing Coordination, a process created by Carl Stough, who I studied with in the 1990's.
• I have practiced as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) since 2013, and have advanced training and over 40 years of experience in a variety of bodywork systems.
• As a Senior Massage Therapist and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for 17 years, I have extensive experience supporting patients and their caregivers from diagnosis through treatment and post-treatment for all kinds of cancer.
• My background as a professional jazz musician and vocalist informs my therapy work as well, and I welcome clients in the arts and those who love the arts.
• Perhaps you've tried different types of talk therapy and would like to explore working with your body in therapy as well. My specialty is Integrative Somatic Psychotherapy, which is like regular psychotherapy, but includes the body.
• If we work together, I may do table work at times, which means you may want to be on the massage table, and we may do some gentle work to encourage you to feel good and safe in your body.
I am trained in EMDR, another evidence-based way to work with and process trauma. I also specialize in working with people who are HSPs (HSP = Highly Sensitive Person). High Sensitivity, also known as 'sensory processing sensitivity', is now recognized as a natural temperament innate to about 20% of almost all species, not just humans. It is The highly sensitive person appreciates and wants depth and needs the time and space to pursue things in depth. This is not a disorder but a natural orientation.
