About me
I am an analytical music therapist with 25 years of experience working with adults, teens and children, connecting them with their strengths and creativity as part of the healing and coping with anxiety and depression.
Music is a universal language. I use a variety of conventional, exotic instruments and/or sound making devices, as well as the voice in musical improvisation to access buried emotions and experiences directly and effectively. The goal is to access and express difficult emotions and experiences within an empathic relationship with the potential for reparative experiences and an increase in coping skills. All children are born with the gifts of spontaneity and creativity. To meet them in their world of imagination, using their own language of play, music and art is a direct path to health. I have helped people who struggle with anxiety and/or depression due to trauma, learning challenges, peer pressures, life changes and/or family dynamics. My work includes a close collaboration with parents and/or caregivers.
For adults, music therapy might provide a richer and more intuitive experience with which to explore anxiety and/or depression. They often are drawn to music therapy after having found conventional talk therapy limited in being able to access their emotions in depth.
My experiences and skills as a jazz singer and voice coach provide a unique understanding of how powerful music can be in helping people discover their own voices…musical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual. It is a creative and joyful medium, serving as a motivator to engage in therapy. Clients do not have to be able to play an instrument but the process invites them to be curious and playful in using music to explore their inner lives. At times, that also includes deep breath work and guided music relaxation all wihtin a therapeutic environment that is peaceful, calm, nurturing, playful, safe; and alive with music in all of its facets to guide clients towards health and well-being.
