About me

A dedicated LMHC providing a 'compass' for families navigating grief, transitions, and developmental challenges through brain-based, grounded resilience.

Helping Families Navigate the Terrain of Grief, Growth, and Transition
Life often brings seasons that feel like uncharted territory. Whether your child is struggling with emotional regulation at school, or your family is weathering a significant life transition or loss, you don't have to navigate it without a map. I am Jennifer McCollum, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and the founder of McCollum Counseling. I provide a "compass" for families, helping them move from a place of overwhelm to one of grounded resilience.

A Specialized Approach to the Developing Brain
With over 20 years of experience in Family and Child Development, my approach is rooted in the "why" behind the behavior. I specialize in working with children and high-capacity parents who are dealing with issues ranging from anxiety or depression to unexplained behavioral challenges.

I utilize evidence-based, "brain-based" interventions that go beyond traditional talk therapy:

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP): A non-invasive acoustic intervention that helps calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Sandtray Therapy: A creative, non-verbal outlet for children and adults to express complex emotions that are often difficult to put into words.

Therapeutic Play: Utilizing child development expertise to foster emotional regulation and social-emotional growth.

The "Wounded Healer" Perspective
My practice is built on a "Legacy of Navigation." As a military spouse and Gold Star widow, I bring a unique perspective to grief and family transitions. I understand the weight of resilience because I have lived it. My background in mentoring widows and advocating for child development allows me to meet my clients with authentic empathy and a steady, experienced hand.

What to Expect
I provide a modern, accessible therapeutic experience through a secure virtual platform. While we meet through a screen, the environment I cultivate is far from cold or corporate. I strive to bring a sense of "Florida-centric calm" to our digital sessions—creating a warm, focused, and minimalist space where you can feel grounded and heard from the comfort of your own home.

Virtual therapy with me is more than just a video call; it is a dedicated time for navigation and growth. By meeting you in your own environment, we can:

Reduce the Stress of Logistics: No commutes or waiting rooms, making it easier for high-capacity parents to find time for their family’s mental health.

Create Comfort for Children: Children often feel more secure and open when sharing from their own safe spaces, which enhances the efficacy of our therapeutic work.

Practical Tools for Real Life: We work together to implement strategies—like mindfulness and regulation techniques—directly into the environment where you and your child live and learn.

My goal is to provide the clinical insight of a 20-year career with the convenience and comfort of a virtual partnership, ensuring you have the tools to unlock your family’s potential wherever you are.
