About me

You don't know me... but I know you!

You're a highly-sensitive, neurodivergent, burnt out, recovering people-pleaser who feels all the feelings but hides them really well.
You've already spent years in therapy for "anxiety" and "depression" but recently realized that traditional talk therapy isn't getting to the root of your issues.
You've been told you're "very self-aware" and you internally cringe every time because this is precisely the problem.
You were a "gifted kid" in school and now you can't figure out the hot bartender's tip without a calculator.
You're probably a woman or feminine-presenting member of the LGBTQIA+ and/or BIPOC community who feels the weight of oppression more and more every day and is boiling with righteous indignation!

So, how'd I do? If I got at least some of it right, keep reading.

I would imagine you're feeling overwhelmed and exhausted right now (especially if you've spent the last 3 hours reading through therapist bios with your phone 4 inches from your face). Before we go any further, I want to invite you to pause for a moment. Rest your attention on your breath. Inhale, exhale, and relax your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Ground yourself in this moment. Inhale, exhale. Now, when you're ready, let's continue.

It's likely that you are seeking therapy to feel a sense of relief. Maybe you want to feel more confident socially, understand where you fall on the gender spectrum, or explore possible ADHD. Perhaps you're a student and are struggling with grades, homework, or exam anxiety, which is confusing given that you were on the honor roll in high school. Or maybe you're in your villain era, exploring boundary setting for the first time and need a space to process the guilt that comes with that. You might be a woman/femme who has been repeatedly harmed by men and patriarchal values and structures, and now you realize you're not crazy or unhinged; your ex might have just been an abusive POS.

Thank Neptune you're in the right place! I can help you understand yourself (no, not intellectually understand yourself, I mean *understand* yourself); discover, accept, and harmonize with parts of yourself that are holding you back; learn new skills; and experience genuine interpersonal safety.

So, we've covered who you are. Now allow me to introduce myself.
I'm a neurospicy, queer, introverted, highly-sensitive, tattooed, laid-back therapist. I'm a picky eater who believes pineapple DOES belong on pizza, but garlic bread is a disgrace. I'm a cat mom to four babies for whom I'd absolutely go to war. I have lived experience with hardship, mental health challenges, and trauma, and I know for a fact that this makes me a better clinician. I like running on the treadmill, yoga, gardening, drawing, coloring my hair, goth glam makeup, and leaving men on read.
I got my Master's in Community and Trauma Counseling from Jefferson University in 2021 and have been practicing ever since. My therapeutic approach is foundationally relational and heavily informed by parts work, attachment theory, and neurobiology. I incorporate various methodologies depending on the client, but consistently maintain a safe and nonjudgmental space where clients can communicate freely and experience messy emotions. I'm still a relatively new therapist (working towards licensure) and am constantly learning both from my clients and through professional trainings. You can expect a blend of humor, Spongebob references, guest appearances by my cats, gentle challenging, and radical honesty in sessions with me. I am a passionate, pro-choice, trans-inclusive feminist and I incorporate this into my work.

If you'd like to talk about potentially working together, please email me at jharlanmscounseling@gmail.com to set up a free video consult. I can't wait to hear from you! <3
