About me

I have been a clinical psychologist for over 25 years and utilize an eclectic approach to supporting, encouraging and fostering positive change in clients. My career started working with children, adolescents and adults dealing with trauma--victims of violent crime, rape, sexual abuse and intimate partner violence. Following this I provided supervision for staff at MISSSEY, an Oakland-based nonprofit dedicated to helping those impacted by sex trafficking recover, heal, and create new, safe and positive lives. Next, I worked for the County of Alameda in the Social Services Department assessing individuals applying for General Assistance. The community served in this department consisted of recent immigrants, formerly incarcerated, low-income individuals, minorities, unhoused, and drug and alcohol dependent adults. For the past 7 years I have seen older adults with acute and chronic medical conditions, psychiatric disorders, and cognitive decline in Skilled Nursing Facilities.

I have lived, worked, worshipped and married in the Black Community for over 40 years. I also have lived experience and knowledge of Hispanic cultures, specifically Mexican, and am open to all people of every ethnicity, race, age and gender. My therapeutic style is a Person-Centered Positive Psychology approach implementing Cognitive Behavioral and Acceptance and Commitment therapies, plus Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Interpersonal Psychology. Areas of expertise include Mood Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Relationship Issues, Life Transitions, Work and Career Challenges, Chronic Pain, Medical Conditions, Grief and Bereavement, Pet Loss, and Spiritual Wellness. Depending on the client's needs and goals, I will assign "homework" in the form of writing, journaling, mindfulness and relaxation exercises, reading, listening to podcasts or YouTube videos, identifying and scheduling pleasurable activities, and various forms of self-care.

Each client is unique and requires a tailor-made therapeutic style to match their personality, individual needs, family history, ethnic and socioeconomic background, mental health issues, goals, and readiness for growth and change. I endeavor to meet you where you are in a way that provides comfort, unconditional regard, respect, understanding, empathy and trust.
