About me
Licensed psychologist with 35 years of experience working with adult clients on issues of depression, anxiety, workplace stress, trauma recovery, grief, addictions, couples' issues, LGBTQIA concerns, Veterans' issues, and coping with medical problems.
I am a licensed psychologist in the state of MA, having received my Masters (1988) and PhD (1992) in clinical psychology from the Univ of Buffalo-SUNY, and having completed my clinical internship training at VA Boston Healthcare System's Jamaica Plain campus. Since October, 1996, I have maintained a part-time evening private practice in downtown Boston. From 1992 until 2025, I also had a fulltime day job at VA Boston Healthcare System and was an assistant professor in the Division of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. Since my retirement from the VA and BU School of Med in December, 2025, I have expanded my private practice hours to Tues/Weds/Thurs 12pm-8pm, and I will be continuing to work with adult individual clients and couples in my current office located in Boston's Financial District. I work from a combined cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and systems theoretical perspective, and take a highly interactive approach, working with clients on motivation, education, and skills to identify problems and to work toward more effective functioning, fewer distressing symptoms, and a more satisfying life. I have a background in Relapse Prevention for addictions, and in "third-wave" cognitive-behavioral treatments like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive-Processing Therapy, iand Barlow et al's Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic anxiety and depression situations, in addition to interventions for grief, for coping with one's own and one's loved ones' medical problems, for hoarding/acquiring concerns, and for dealing with sexuality and gender issues. I have a de facto specialization in working with attorneys and law-firm employees from years of working with clients from the legal community, training and experience working with opposite- and same-gender couples, and many years of work helping clients with workplace stress, depression/bipolar issues, and various forms of anxiety. For decades in my day job, I worked with addiction issues (chemical dependency in particular, but also compulsive sexual behavior disorder, tobacco cessation etc.), and I also work on these issues with my private patients. I worked for years doing HIV education, advocacy, case management, research, and clinical work, and also have decades of experience teaching and doing clinical supervision of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Social Work trainees in their provision of group and individual psychotherapy. I also have extensive experience addressing post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma histories, and have worked with diverse populations for many years, having an interest in: racial and ethnic issues (I have worked with African-American, Asian-American, Latino/Latina, Native-American, bi-racial/bi-cultural, and recently-immigrated clients); socio-educational/economic class and "class shift" issues; spirituality and religious concerns; and sexuality and gender dynamics and identity (I have worked with clients from the BDSM community, pansexual clients, polyamorous individuals, and transgender, bi-gender, and genderqueer clients); in cultural and cross-cultural issues; and in linguistic diversity (I speak English, French, and a fair amount of Italian, and can also read a fair bit of Spanish, and I have family all over the USA, Europe, and South America). I also have a longstanding history as a genealogist, and I work with clients on family issues and on "DNA surprises" about clients' backgrounds and parentage. I view psychotherapy as "an informed conversation", and I work best with clients who take an active role in their own treatment and who are motivated to understand their issues and to make active changes in how they manage their cognitions, emotions, and interpersonal interactions. To assist clients, I maintain referral relationships with several area psychiatric nurse practitioners for psychopharmacology evaluations, and, when indicated, get out of the office with clients for in vivo exposure sessions for treatment of various forms of anxiety. I accept private pay referrals, offer some sliding scale fees, and take some insurance plans. Though no longer at the VA, I have 33 years of experience working with Veterans, and a longstanding respect for and commitment to the well-being of military veterans and their families. My current office space does not allow for group therapy, but I am also a highly skilled group facilitator, having run groups weekly for many years in my former hospital job. Early in my career, I also had two years' full-time experience working with children and families, and I have seen older teens in my current practice, as well. I welcome phone inquiries about my practice and can be reached at 617-460-4262. I try to do some basic "screening" over the phone, at no charge, to help the client get a good sense as to whether I might be a sensible fit for their therapy needs. I also maintain a referral list of other area providers that I am happy to share with clients if I happen to be full, or if the client and/or I feel that a different provider might be a better "fit" for the client's needs. In keeping with modern practice modalities, I offer both in-office/in-person and online/video appointments, depending on client needs and availability. I am excited finally to be able to offer more hours in my private office, now that I am retired from my "day job", and I look forward to welcoming new clients in the coming years.
