Trauma, Anxiety, Depression...and the Patterns That Keep You Stuck
Sometimes you have to go back...before you can finally move ahead...

Stress is this: A deadline is looming - at 4:00 PM, you're making a live, virtual presentation to a large group of really important people. Stress - with its accompanying heart palpitations, sweaty palms, and mental pressure - is a legitimate reaction to an immediate, demanding circumstance. And as 4 o’clock approaches, the pressure mounts. Your stress is like a rollercoaster: it’s sudden, lots of ups and downs, sharp curves and emotional whiplash, and sometimes near-panic. But then, once it’s over … it’s over.

Your anxiety is more of a slow burn in the background. It starts weeks before when you're ruminating about what went wrong the last time - all that could have-would have-should have happened - you're thinking-thinking over-thinking with a churning stomach…about what are now regrets or resentments. Then other times, your anxiety is all about what’s coming down the pike - and what could go wrong, what 'will' you do wrong, the rabbit-holing, the catastrophizing. Your anxiety lasts for - as long as you let it, until it fades away.

Working on Rikers Island, crisis counseling after 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, training at Columbia University, and my own personal tragedies have prepared me for this. I do not have all the answers.
