About me

I am a compassionate, trauma-informed Licensed Professional Counselor dedicated to helping adults heal from trauma, narcissistic abuse, and unhealthy relationships while rebuilding confidence, self-trust, and emotional well-being.

Healing begins when you feel safe enough to be heard, understood, and accepted.

Have you ever found yourself questioning your own thoughts, feelings, or memories after being in a relationship where you felt criticized, manipulated, controlled, or emotionally dismissed? Perhaps you've spent years putting everyone else's needs before your own, walking on eggshells to avoid conflict, or wondering why you no longer recognize the person you've become. You may know something needs to change but feel overwhelmed, uncertain, or unsure where to begin. If any of this sounds familiar, I want you to know that healing is possible, and you don't have to navigate it alone.

Hi, I'm Brandi Gillam, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and founder of Brave Horizon Institute LLC.

I specialize in helping adults navigate the emotional and psychological effects of trauma, domestic violence, narcissistic abuse, emotional manipulation, and unhealthy relationship dynamics. My passion is helping individuals move beyond simply surviving their experiences toward rediscovering their identity, rebuilding their confidence, and creating lives grounded in emotional safety, self-trust, and personal empowerment.

I understand that the effects of trauma are not always visible. Sometimes they show up as anxiety, self-doubt, difficulty setting boundaries, people-pleasing, perfectionism, emotional exhaustion, or feeling responsible for other people's emotions and behaviors. You may struggle to trust your judgment, recognize your own needs, or feel confident making decisions. You might even find yourself repeating relationship patterns you promised yourself you would never experience again.

These experiences can leave you feeling disconnected from yourself and uncertain about what healthy relationships should look like.

My goal is to help you understand how your experiences have affected you, develop healthier ways of responding to life's challenges, and reconnect with the person you are beneath the pain, fear, and expectations of others.

My Experience and Approach to Therapy
I earned my Master's degree in Counseling and have worked as a professional counselor since 2016. My clinical experience includes working with individuals experiencing trauma, emotional distress, relationship difficulties, and significant life transitions. Since 2020, I have focused extensively on trauma-related concerns, including spending approximately two and a half years working directly with survivors of domestic violence.

These experiences have deepened my understanding of how abuse, manipulation, and traumatic relationships can affect a person's emotional well-being, sense of identity, ability to trust, and perception of safety.

I approach therapy with compassion, curiosity, and respect for your individual experiences. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is not to tell you what decisions to make but to help you develop the insight, confidence, and tools needed to make choices that align with your needs, values, and goals.

My therapeutic approach is trauma-informed, collaborative, and individualized. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing, and I recognize that each person's experiences, strengths, and recovery process are unique.

I integrate evidence-based and supportive therapeutic approaches, including:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): As an EMDR-trained therapist, I use this approach to help clients process distressing experiences and reduce the emotional intensity associated with traumatic memories and negative beliefs.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): I help clients identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, strengthen emotional regulation, and develop healthier responses to difficult situations.

Mindfulness-Based Techniques: I incorporate mindfulness strategies to help clients increase self-awareness, reconnect with the present moment, and develop a greater sense of emotional balance.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT): When appropriate, I incorporate EFT-based strategies to support emotional awareness, stress management, and coping.

Together, we will explore which approaches best support your needs, comfort level, and treatment goals.

Areas I Specialize In
Although I work with adults experiencing a variety of mental health and relationship concerns, I have a particular passion for helping individuals who have experienced emotional abuse, narcissistic abuse, domestic violence, and complex relationship trauma.

Some of the concerns I frequently help clients address include:
- Healing from narcissistic abuse and emotional manipulation
- Recovering from domestic violence and controlling relationships
- Processing childhood trauma and difficult past experiences
- Recognizing unhealthy relationship patterns and trauma bonds
- Rebuilding self-esteem, confidence, and personal identity
- Learning to establish and maintain healthy boundaries
- Overcoming chronic self-doubt, guilt, and people-pleasing
- Managing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, and trauma responses
- Rebuilding trust in yourself and your decision-making
- Navigating separation, divorce, and major life transitions
- Developing healthier communication and relationship skills
- Processing grief, loss, and the emotional impact of relationship changes

I also recognize that narcissistic and emotionally abusive dynamics are not limited to romantic relationships. These experiences can occur within families, friendships, workplaces, and other important relationships.

Regardless of where these experiences occurred, their emotional effects deserve to be acknowledged and addressed.

What You Can Expect When Working With Me
Beginning therapy can feel intimidating, especially if your experiences have taught you that expressing your emotions, asking for help, or being vulnerable is unsafe.

I strive to create a therapeutic environment where you feel respected, supported, and comfortable being yourself without fear of judgment.

You will not be pressured to share more than you are ready to discuss, and we will work at a pace that respects your emotional needs and sense of safety.

During our sessions, we may explore how past experiences influence your current thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. We may work on identifying unhealthy patterns, developing emotional regulation skills, processing traumatic memories, strengthening boundaries, and challenging beliefs that no longer serve you.

Most importantly, we will focus on helping you reconnect with your strengths and recognize that you have choices, even when circumstances feel overwhelming.

I believe therapy should be more than a place to talk about what has happened to you. It should also be a space where you gain practical tools, develop meaningful insight, and begin creating the changes you want to experience in your life.

You do not have to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. You only need a willingness to explore what healing might look like for you.

About Brave Horizon Institute
I founded Brave Horizon Institute LLC with the belief that healing involves more than recovering from painful experiences. It is also about rediscovering your voice, reclaiming your identity, and creating a future that reflects your values, needs, and aspirations.

My practice is grounded in compassion, empowerment, authenticity, emotional safety, and respect for each individual's journey.

At Brave Horizon Institute, my mission is to help clients move beyond survival and toward a life where they feel more confident, emotionally secure, and connected to themselves.

Where Courage Meets Healing and Hope Shapes the Horizon.

Convenient and Accessible Online Therapy
Brave Horizon Institute provides individual therapy exclusively through secure telehealth services for adults physically located in Missouri at the time of their appointments.

Online therapy allows you to participate in sessions from a private, comfortable location without the additional stress of commuting to an office.

I accept self-pay clients and participate with insurance plans, depending on eligibility and coverage.

I also offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation so we can briefly discuss what brings you to therapy, answer questions about my approach, and explore whether working together may be a good fit.

Finding the right therapist is an important decision, and I want you to feel comfortable and informed as you take that step.

Your Next Chapter Can Look Different
If you've spent years feeling unheard, misunderstood, emotionally exhausted, or disconnected from yourself, you may have difficulty imagining what life could look like beyond those experiences.

Perhaps you're still navigating a difficult relationship. Maybe you've recently left one and are trying to make sense of what happened. Or you may have been out of an unhealthy situation for years but continue to struggle with its emotional effects.

Wherever you are in your journey, you deserve an opportunity to explore your experiences, strengthen your sense of self, and discover what emotional well-being means to you.

Healing does not require you to forget your past, minimize what happened, or become someone entirely different. It can mean learning to understand your experiences without allowing them to define your future.

You deserve relationships where you feel respected, boundaries that protect your well-being, and a life that feels like your own.

If you're ready to begin exploring what healing and personal growth might look like, I invite you to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

I would be honored to support you as you take the next steps toward reclaiming your voice, rebuilding your confidence, and creating a future filled with greater clarity, courage, and hope.
