About me
Hello. I am Theresa “Terri” Yu, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Oklahoma and Colorado. I am also a National Certified Counselor and a member of CSI Counseling Honor Society. I received my Bachelor’s in Applied Ministries: Foreign Missions Emphasis from Oklahoma Baptist University, my Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University and currently a doctoral candidate in Counseling Education and Supervision.
My counseling approach is to style therapy on what will work for you best and providing a safe, judgment free space. I use an eclectic approach to therapy and address your needs by using various traditional approaches including Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Person Centered Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychoeducation, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trust-Based Relational Intervention, and Rapid Resolution Therapy. My therapeutic in style involves helping you to achieve insight and strategies and tools that you can use to begin to make immediate positive changes in your life. I will be there to help guide you, encourage you, and possibly even challenge you, to overcome obstacles to stand in your way.
My experience includes providing online telehealth, home-based & office-based counseling services with children, teens, and families with history of trauma/abuse/neglect, complex developmental trauma, special needs, Autism Spectrum Disorders/Asperger’s, oppositional defiant disorder, and other behavioral problems/issues. I also work with adults, couples and families for a variety of issues, including stress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationship problems and coping with life changes. I have worked in several fields including as a social worker, foster/adoptive specialist for child protective services, Elem. School Special Education paraprofessional, pre-k teacher, and behavioral health rehabilitation/case manager.
I am a mother to 4 girls, ages 25, 23, 19, 14 & have guardianship of 1 boy age 17. I also host and place foreign exchange student in the community and love to learn about their different cultures. I am also an avid pet lover with 4 dogs and two cats. Two of my dogs are currently training to be therapy dogs.
I look forward to meeting with you and working together to develop a plan to helping you live your most authentic live. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or would like to talk more. I understand that finding the right therapist can take time, so it’s OK to try this out and see if it’s a good fit for you. Overall I value honesty and want you to feel empowered to do what’s best for you.
