About me
As a seasoned licensed psychologist, I was a tenured professor in the Psychology Department at Howard University prior to focusing exclusively on my private practice. I was president of the Washington Society for the Study of Eating Disorders and Obesity for six years. My practice is entirely virtual now, offering teletherapy to people living in Maryland and Florida.
A graduate of Harvard University, I have written extensively in the field of eating disorders, on such topics as "Feminist Perspectives of Eating Disorders," "Risk for Eating Disorders in the Young Athletes," "Body Shame in Childhood and Adolescence," and "The Media's Role in Body Image and Eating Disorders." With kindness, compassion for where my patients are, and hope for where they are heading, I focus on helping patients understand the power of self-compassion to help them heal and grow. When we as individuals learn to prize and celebrate ourselves, life becomes not only easier, but also more enjoyable.
I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders and other self-harming behaviors, anxiety, and depression, and enjoy working with motivated teens who are medically stable, individuals in their 20s and 30s, and older adults. I utilize aspects of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, DialecticaL Behavior Therapy, and Compassion Focused Therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy to help individuals develop healthier ways of coping with stress and become more self-loving, happier individuals.
