Robert J. Smith, LCSW, BCD

I am an experienced compassionate therapist who works with individual adults, older adults, and couples experiencing problems with depression and anxiety, health, trauma, and relationship difficulties.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist. I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Master of Social Work in 1979. I have worked in psychiatric inpatient and outpatient services and am on the professional staff of Advocate Aurora Lutheran General Hospital and NorthShore University Health Systems, and see clients on Telehealth and in-person in my private practice. I have been married for 44 years and have two adult married children and two grandchildren.

My approach to providing care is individualized for each person or couple that I see. I believe in collaborating together as being the most effective way to address your concerns. I also prefer to work in conjunction with your other healthcare providers with your consent. I have specialized training in Gestalt therapy, Solution-Oriented Therapy, Clinical Hypnosis, Existential therapy, and couples and family therapy. I believe in using various approaches that work best for each person. I am an active listener and also like to ask questions to prompt thought, and also provide input and direction to help you address your concerns. I provide safe, confidential, non-judgmental services.

Additionally, I have taught psychiatry residents marriage and family therapy, clinical hypnosis, clinical ethics, and mindfulness practices. I have clinically supervised a partial hospital clinical staff and students in social work and psychology. I was a board member of the National Association of Social Workers Illinois Chapter 2015-2017.
