About me

Michael uses a humanistic and a client-centered approach.  Michael has broad experience with a wide-range of individuals- including persons in the LGBTQI+ community- with issues of coming out, relationships, dating, co-habitation, sexual addiction, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, bullying, social stigmatization, recent breakups and intimacy issues. Not being afraid to talk about the difficult things equips Michael to do this work.

Michael San Giovanni is a graduate from Baruch College in Mental Health Counseling and has a BFA from SUNY Purchase. In addition, he has 10 years experience as a peer counselor, short term counselor and group facilitator in relationships, sexual dysfunction, and coming out in the LGBTQI+ community. Michael is on the steering committee at Identity House, and he is responsible for new peer and therapists recruitment. He is also a Certified Professional Life Coach and has been in private practice since 2013 at ReadySetLiveNYC. In addition to this work, he is also a trained actor, singer and ballet dancer, and he has performed extensively throughout New York City, Nationally, and Internationally. As an out gay man for more than 35 years, he has acquired robust sensibilities around LGBTQI+ issues. As a performer, having traveled the world afforded him experience in a variety of cultural and social perspectives that has shaped his world view and interpersonal strengths. He is a devoted member of a large network of family and friends, and he knows what it's like to share common goals, and the value of compromise. As a student counselor, he charges himself with focusing upon lending an empathetic ear, and working to develop a deep understanding and appreciation for those with whom he works. Michael is open to working with anyone and strongly believes that each client brings challenges and opportunities for both counselor and client. He is extremely open and non-judgmental and will create the safest space for his clients to relax, open up, become curious, and explore everything they are comfortable revealing.
