My basic philosophy and approach is one that is generally cognitive-behavioral in nature, while also using brief solution-focused techniques and/or dialectical behavior therapy as appropriate, depending on client needs and progress in the session. Cognitive behavioral therapy techniques provide structure for the therapy process and a pathway for change and healing using the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events. My personal philosophical orientation allows me to use many different methods to address the problems you or your child may bring to the counseling session. When working with children, art or play is often an avenue I use during therapy to gain insight and begin discussion. One of my goals will be to understand what is important to my client(s) and this understanding will help guide and promote our counseling sessions and the healing process. I hold a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Walla Walla University in College Place, Washington, as well as a Masters of Education from the state of Pennsylvania and am an Oregon licensed school counselor, school psychologist, and professional counselor. Much of my career has been spent with children and their families in educational and residential treatment settings. In clinical settings, I have counseled adults in individual, couple, and family therapy. Major course-work and experience in my own education and training includes assessment and diagnosis of mental health and behavioral disorders, and counseling techniques for individuals, children, adolescents, families, marriage (primarily Gottman), and groups.
