Lani is a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a designation of being a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a focus on Christian Counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Lani completed her Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling also from Liberty, which is an accredited program through the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, (CACREP). Her experience ranges from lay counselor with a nonprofit organization, professional counseling inside several Community Mental Health organizations in Pierce County before transitioning into private practice. Lani works predominantly with adults age 18+.

Lani specializes in trauma work to include complex, developmental, and single incident (PTSD), anxiety, depression, mood disorders, anger, and distress. There is not a one size fits all approach inside of therapy, therefore Lani uses a therapeutic style which is eclectic in nature, interweaving many different approaches to meet the needs and goals of the client. Lani is trained in EMDR which is an evidence-based approach. She often combines EMDR with other types of therapy and has completed training for Cognitive Processing for PTSD and brief therapy approaches; Solution Focused and Motivational Interviewing for other presenting symptoms. Mindfulness and Dialectical approaches are mainstays when working on grounding and resourcing for Lani’s clients in managing emotional dysregulation. Other evidence-based approaches are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and a strength-based approach through a Person Center therapeutic style.

When navigating unexpected events, situations, or traumas, the presence of anxiety and depression can overwhelm our sense of being present in the moment and we may feel trapped inside our feelings. Sometimes our difficulties have been present since childhood, left unattended or pushed down repeatedly over the years and now triggers and stimuli bring flashbacks and nightmares. Some clients come to counseling seeking ways to deal with a specific trauma, domestic violence, grief and loss, anger, or any other distressing event/emotion that leaves the person feeling isolated, stuck, and without resources. Taking the next step, asking for help, and engaging in counseling, brings you closer to the destination of wellness and recovery. Lani provides face to face sessions and telehealth. To schedule an appointment or speak to Lani, she can be reached at: (253) 858-2224, Ext. 316 or email: lanikish@lanikishcounselingpllc.net
