About me
I try to help. To do that, I try my best to create a safe place, free of judgment. That's the gist of it.
Professionally, I'm a licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Purdue University and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Truman State University. I've been working in the mental health field in one way or another for around 25 years, during which I've worked with individuals ranging in age from 5 to 80 within various settings, including university counseling centers, outpatient mental health clinics, an adult substance abuse treatment facility, and an alternative school for boys. I completed my one-year doctoral internship at the Missouri Health Sciences Psychology Consortium based within the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia, MO, where I was able to provide veterans and their spouses with mental health services and to gain experience in crisis management, outpatient mental health care, inpatient treatment, and substance abuse treatment. In 2005, I joined Clarkson Counseling, a group private practice, where I've been ever since.
Conceptually, I believe that there are times we could all use some extra support, someone to listen, and feedback from someone who can approach our lives with a little bit of objectivity. This is where talking to someone like me can be a good option. My job is to provide you with a safe place where you can talk without the fear of being judged or criticized. I will listen. I will also challenge your thinking by providing you with a different perspective, and together we'll work toward a little more clarity in your life.
I believe it's important to accept my clients where they are and to help them examine their lives within the context of their struggles, relationships (past and present), and beliefs about themselves, others, and the world in general. Within that context, a person's concerns can better be understood.
If you think it would be good to talk to someone, call or send me an email. Please include your name and telephone number. I'll call you as soon as I can. I look forward to talking to you.
