I often talk about “walking the path” alongside my clients. Often, we think a therapist is going to tell us which path to choose, but I don't do that -- only YOU know the right path for you. I believe, as Carl Rogers taught, that we each have within us the answers we seek. All that is needed is a safe atmosphere to look within, and a non-judgmental companion for the journey. I'm honored when I get to be that companion - not steering clients, but pointing out the hazards that they keep falling into or tripping on.

My name is Barton Shulman – but please call me Bart. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, National Board-Certified Counselor, Board-Certified TeleMental Health Provider, and Gender Specialist, working full-time as an individual and group psychotherapist at a community mental health agency where I primarily serve LGBTQ+ clients and the 50-and-older, long-term HIV survivor community. I work as a member of an interdisciplinary team, working closely with psychiatrists, case managers, substance counselors, and others. My private practice is a passion for me, giving me the freedom to provide the best support for my clients, (and giving me the freedom to help clients to find a different therapist if I'm not the best fit for their needs).
I am licensed in California, Colorado, Florida (telehealth only), Indiana, Kansas, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. (I should shortly be licensed in Illinois and Washington (LH61139701), as well as British Columbia (Canada) and Denmark.)
Clients have described me as warm, genuine, and deeply empathic. My style is integrative, meaning that his psychotherapy is specifically focused on each individual client, with no “cookie cutter” treatment. I am a follower of the teachings of Carl Rogers, who noted, “I can’t make corn grow, but I can provide the right soil and plant it in the right area and see that it gets enough water; I can nurture it so that exciting things happen. I think that’s the nature of therapy.”
