No matter how much I like and care about you, I don’t want you to work with me for years. Preferably, not even for months. I will ask you to do a lot of work to change your life in the way you want. But you’re the captain, and I am the navigator. When I am your navigator, you will get the most comprehensive, thorough partnership that can only come with decades of experience. First, we’ll do a quick survey before and after each session – something that lets me know about the intensity of your emotions before and after we work together that day. Then I will teach you how to record the incidents that upset you and what’s going on in your mind at the time that keeps you upset. That’s part of retraining your brain, and you’ll need to do daily exercises to drill the skills that will turn your life from miserable to joyful. Every session begins with my efforts to express 100% empathy.
I will persist until you can tell me that you feel 100% understood and there is nothing else you want to get off your chest. Only then do we begin the work of changing the patterns that your mind is using to drag you into the mud.
My greatest joy in life is seeing people get better quickly.
