Alan Cyr provides a friendly, nonjudgmental, and practical approach to therapy. He uses an integrative approach but is heavily influenced by rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT). He has experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. His areas of expertise include autism spectrum disorder, addiction recovery, multiple diagnoses, and LGBTQIA issues.
I began my professional career working in secondary education. After several years working in this field, I realized I most enjoyed the opportunity to work with individuals and groups seeking personal growth and change. I decided to go to graduate school for counseling psychology. I did my practicum work in two group homes for adolescents. I then worked at a long-term, residential treatment facility for adults with chronic substance abuse histories. This experience was invaluable, as I was able to become familiar with treating the many underlying conditions that contribute to substance dependence. I have been working in private practice for several years now and continue to work with children, adolescents, and adults through both individual and group therapy.
I have a collaborative style when working with clients. After enough information is gathered (usually over 2-3 sessions), a treatment plan will be drafted, incorporating evidence-based interventions whenever possible. This will also include a preliminary estimate of the recommended number of sessions. I appreciate clients providing input and feedback at each step of the process. I encourage practicing healthy, new behaviors as homework for those clients who are open to this. I especially enjoy working with people from all different backgrounds, life experiences, and challenges.
Since graduating with my MA in counseling psychology with a specialty in marriage and family counseling, I have taken three more graduate classes and engaged in dozens of hours of continuing education courses, both online and in person. Most recently, I attended the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association Annual Conference where I went to multiple workshops from leading experts in the field of psychotherapy. I also read multiple publications and periodicals in the field of applied psychology to stay up-to-date on advancements and new developments in research.
